What success and fulfilment means is unique for each of us. NLP based coaching is particularly useful because it is based on modelling from those who have already navigated their own journeys of success and excellence. NLP modelling helps coaches come up with new approaches based on the clients’ unique way of being in the world. It is a dynamic process.

Coaching founded in NLP is not stereotypical “Life Coaching”. Rather, it is a personalized methodology that empowers a person to be the best version of themselves so they can be a leader of their own life. It leads to the creation of more choices, greater self-awareness, more resourcefulness and more resilience.

It is also about the study of subjective experience: what we see, hear and feel, and how we create our individual realities. This is key to learning how to communicate, both with others, and especially with ourselves.

There are a number of principles or presuppositions that NLP coaching begins with.

Think of these as highest principles to work from as well as to strive for.

The Illustration below outlines these principles in a simple fashion.

So what is NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) really?

NLP is the practice of understanding how people organise their thinking, feeling, language and behaviour to produce the results they do.

NLP is used for personal development and for success in all aspects of living and being inside of all relationships. In fact it is quite embedded in the methodologies of organizations, institutions and governments where influence is the goal.

A key element of NLP is that we form our unique internal mental maps of the world as a product of the way we filter and perceive information absorbed through our five senses from the world around us.

For many, it’s clarifying to offer a definition by showing what we mean by the words neuro, linguistic, and programming.

Neuro: Referring to the mind or brain, particularly regarding how states of mind (and body) affect communication and behavior. NLP teaches a structural way of viewing mind and body states, developing mental maps that show how things happen and how to change course.

Linguistic: Meaning that our mind and body states are revealed in our language and non-verbal communication. Language is the tool we use to gain access to the inner workings of the mind. NLP Coaching teaches us how to access and use unconscious information that would remain vague and unknowable otherwise.

Programming: This refers to the capacity to change our mind and body states. You’ve heard the term living on autopilot, right? This means that you are living according to your programming, which consists of habitual thoughts, feelings, reactions, beliefs, values and traditions.
Someone trained in NLP knows how to discover how your programming is structured in the mind and how to access it so that what you want to change can be changed easily. In this way, you become the person you want to be.

Let’s use a simple example:

Have you ever tried to communicate with someone who didn’t speak your language, and they couldn’t understand you? The classic example of this is when someone goes out to a restaurant in a foreign country and they think they ordered steak, but when the food shows up, it turns out they actually asked for noodle soup.

This is the kind of relationship that most of us have with our own unconscious mind. We might think we are “ordering up” more money, more certainty, a healthy relationship, peace with our family members, and being able to stick to a healthy diet…but unless that’s what showing up, then something is probably getting lost in translation.

In NLP, we have a saying: the conscious mind is the goal setter, and the unconscious mind is the goal getter. Your unconscious mind is not out to get you–rather, it’s out TO GET FOR YOU whatever you want in life. However, if you don’t
know how to communicate what you want properly, it will keep bringing options you don’t want out of the kitchen.

In fact, go ahead right now and think of, if there was one thing you could change, one habit you could break that would have the most significant impact on your life right now, what would it be? ….

Whatever it is, realize that your unconscious mind only produces the results you’re getting because it thinks that’s what you want. (“Sir, here is your procrastination along with a side of anxiety. I’ve also told the valet to bring up your emotional baggage as per your request. Will you be needing anything else?”)

Neuro-Linguistic Programming is like a user’s manual for the brain, and an NLP Coach is trained to learn, and help you learn, how to become fluent in the language of your mind so that the ever-so-helpful “server” that is your unconscious
will clearly understand what you actually want to be, do and have and will align with you to achieve it.

NLP incorporates the study of excellent communication–both with yourself, and with others. It was developed in the 1970’s by modeling excellent communicators and therapists who got results with their clients and evolved to model high performers and those who achieve excellence in their lives. NLP began with a set of tools and techniques, but it is so much more than that. It is an attitude and a way of perceiving and being in the world.

Before NLP, psychology for the most part focused on the ‘abnormalities’ and dysfunctions in human development. NLP doesn’t look at people through that perceptual lens. Instead NLP looks at people through the lens of their highest potential.

Instead of looking inside the problem to find the solution, NLP coaching creates the solution outside of the problem. In other words, how you do it is more important than why you do it.

An NLP Coach can employ their skills as an agent of change working with individuals, groups, companies, or even global organisations and governments. As a technology, NLP has an amazing track record for creating fast and efficient change in individuals as well as groups.

The methodology can be employed across a wide area of applications ranging from fields as diverse as education, team building, training, sales, marketing, personal development, leadership, therapy and coaching. Wherever there is human interaction and growth potential, NLP can be used to develop and enhance performance.

Lastly, combining the various tools available in classic and “new code”, and evolving NLP insights and approaches, allows the reaching of the highest levels of excellence, satisfaction and fulfillment.

Desired change, true transformation, occurs at the highest levels of being, resulting in long lasting and effective results.
