What is Homeopathic Medicine?

Homeopathy is a 200 year-old system of medicine that uses minute doses of a substance to stimulate the body to heal itself. Homeopathic medicines are made from plants, animals and minerals. These medicines are safe for everyone, including pregnant and nursing mothers, as well as infants.

Homeopathy is healthcare that is focused on the individual, not the disease. Even people who are diagnosed with the same illness experience symptoms of that illness differently. Homeopathy works directly with the patient to individualize symptoms for the best homeopathic medicine, not the ailment or illness.

What Can Be Treated with Homeopathy?

Picture1Homeopathy can be used to treat a wide range of ailments including:

  • Colds and flus
  • Ear infections
  • Behaviour issues with children including ADD, ADHD, and autism
  • Digestive issues like heartburn, and reflux
  • Skin complaints
  • Muscle, tendon, and joint complaints
  • Mechanical injuries from sports or other activities
  • Female hormonal issues involving menstruation and menopause
  • Pregnancy and lactation issues including morning sickness, nursing difficulties, and depression after pregnancy

What kind of training do Homeopathic Practitioners have?

Picture1Homeopaths receive exclusive training in the theory, practice, and management of cases according to the principles of homeopathic therapeutics identified in the Organon of Medicine written by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann.

Homeopaths may also receive training in the following areas:

  • Nutrition, and possible interference from both food and supplements (herbal and vitamin) with certain prescription medications
  • Anatomy and physiology (how the body is built and how it functions)
  • Pathophysiology (functional changes that accompany a particular syndrome or disease)
  • Diagnostic physical examination, including blood pressure monitoring, skin examination, ear, nose and throat examinations, eye examinations, as well as pediatric examinations and examinations during pregnancy

In Ontario, anyone using the title Homeopath or Homeopathic Practitioner must undergo a rigourous assessment process through the College of Homeopaths of Ontario to ensure that the person wishing to practice can sufficiently demonstrate meeting all of the competencies required for a homeopath. All registered Ontario homeopaths are identified on the public register.

What to expect from the first homeopathic consultation?

Picture1The initial homeopathic consultation lasts one and a half hours. During this consultation, you’ll be asked to describe all of your symptoms in the following way:

  • Sensation the symptom produces, such as whether the pain is burning, sharp or shooting
  • What makes the symptom better or worse
  • Intensity and duration of the symptom
  • Location of the symptom
  • When and how the symptom started
  • Any other symptoms that happen at the same time as the primary symptom

You’ll also be asked to describe general physical and emotional characteristics that are typical for you including:

  • Level of thirst
  • Appetite, including food cravings and dislikes
  • Food sensitivities
  • Body temperature
  • Urinary, bowel and digestive function
  • Sleep quality and typical themes experienced while dreaming
  • Fears and phobias
  • Reactions to weather and seasonal changes
  • Environmental sensitivities

How often are follow-up appointments needed?

If you are seeking treatment for an acute condition that is not recurring, there will likely be no more than one to three follow-up appointments needed.

If you are seeking treatment for long-standing chronic conditions, one follow up per month for the first six months of treatment is recommended. Depending on the nature of your illness and your progress, these follow-up intervals may be longer or shorter. The suggested interval for follow-up appointments will be discussed with you during the initial consultation so you know what to expect.

The follow-up consultation typically lasts about 30 minutes. Your case notes from the previous session are thoroughly reviewed to assess any changes in your symptom picture. The homeopath uses this information to interpret the results of the homeopathic medicine prescribed, and determine whether to:

  • continue with the previously prescribed homeopathic medicine
  • prescribe another homeopathic medicine
  • change the dosing strategy of the currently selected homeopathic medicine.

What to expect from Homeopathic Treatment

No two people are alike and homeopathic treatment plans reflect that uniqueness. With homeopathic treatment, you can expect:

  • Thorough case analysis to find the best homeopathic medicine to encourage your body to heal itself
  • Regular case management using your symptoms as a guide to the best homeopathic medicine selections for you over time
  • Advice on nutritional and lifestyle changes for optimal treatment results
